We witnessed the deadliest war on Gaza in the last quarter of 2023. Today, the enclave is in rubbles and the death toll unimaginable. Journalism has been one the deadliest professions, with more journalists killed in Gaza than in any other single conflict in the last 30 years. With the tight siege on the Gaza Strip, a siege that has preceded the war but which was hardened during the Israeli military operations in Gaza, only Palestinian journalists on the ground could carry the every day record of this historic moment to the world. They witnessed, brought images and words that depict to the world the daily loss of their own home.
The panel is an attempt to focus on Palestinians telling their own story about the atrocities as they unfolded and more broadly, what does it mean to cover your own war? How did Palestinian journalists experience the war as it progressed? How did they engage their Palestinian, Arab and international audiences? But also how have Palestinian voices been shadow banned by big tech? How did Palestinian journalists cope with the convoluted roles they have been given in the midst of this war: journalists, human rights defenders, etc...? What has been the cost of this work for them? What are the current needs for journalists inside Gaza? Moderated by Lina Attalah, co-founder Mada Masr.

Lina Attalah
Lina Attalah is the publisher of Mada Masr, a Cairo-based news website. She has been a journalist for over a decade, covering primarily Egypt and the region, including the Syrian revolution, the 2013 Iran presidential elections and the Darfur conflict in Sudan. She was previously the chief editor of Egypt Independent, another Egyptian leading English-language news media.
Youmna ElSayed
Youmna ElSayed is Gaza Strip correspondent for Al Jazeera English. An Egyptian-Palestinian journalist, she pursued journalism as a desire and a passion rather than as a component of her academic education. Over the past eight years, she has worked for different international news outlets. Her main motivation has always been to convey the human stories of the people and be a voice for the voiceless. Youmna has lived for the last ten years in Gaza and is the mother of four children. She has raised awareness of the difficulties, sufferings, and obstacles faced by the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation.
Nadim Nashif
Nadim Nashif is a social entrepreneur and digital rights defender. He is also the founder and General director of 7amleh – The Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media, a Palestinian digital rights organization, Nadim is also a senior policy analyst for Al-Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network. For the past 20 years, he has worked on community development issues.
Wafa’ Abdel Rahman
Wafa’ Abdel Rahman is the founder and general director of Filastiniyat: Media for Women and Youth, based in Ramallah. She is also the founder of The Palestinian Female Journalists’ club that brings together 400 female journalists in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, and editor-in-chief of NAWA Feminist News Agency, an online platform for women and the marginalized. She holds an MA in Politics of Alternative Development Strategies from the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague.
