Da miliardi di anni la storia dei virus si intreccia con quella della vita sulla Terra. Il nostro stesso DNA conserva tracce di questa relazione antica, con frammenti di sequenze virali che hanno contribuito all'evoluzione di funzioni fondamentali: la formazione della placenta nei mammiferi, ma anche quella del rivestimento mielinico nel sistema nervoso dei vertebrati. Lo spillover, il salto di specie di un virus da un ospite all’altro, rappresenta un ulteriore esempio di intreccio biologico, in cui ecosistemi, specie e genetica si incontrano in un equilibrio dinamico. Ma i virus non sono solo testimoni del passato: le conoscenze acquisite sui meccanismi molecolari alla base della loro replicazione stanno aprendo nuove frontiere dalla terapia genica, dove virus modificati sono usati come vettori per correggere alcune malattie genetiche, a cure antivirali innovative e vaccini per noi e per altre specie. Attraverso questa mostra interattiva potrete immergervi nella meraviglia del mondo nanoscopico: tenere un virus sul palmo della mano, toccare e “sentire” le sue componenti, scoprire a cosa servono e come funzionano tutte le parti che lo compongono, in un viaggio indimenticabile tra il lontano passato e il prossimo futuro.
