The death toll of Palestinian journalists continues to grow as the conditions of those working on the ground continue to deteriorate. The violence on the ground has refocused attention on the importance of the independent media sector in Palestine; not only the conditions it operates under today but conditions of work prior to 7 October and what to consider are future priorities for this critical and beleaguered sector.

Shuruq As'ad
With 30 years of journalism experience, Shuruq As'ad is a pioneering journalist and media trainer based between Jerusalem and Ramallah. She made history as one of the first female journalists and TV anchors on Palestine TV (PBC) after its establishment in 1994 following the Oslo Accords. Shuruq has worked as a correspondent for renowned Arab TV Channels such as Al Jazeera, Al Arabiya, LBC, Nile News, and is currently the correspondent for Dubai TV in Palestine and Israel, covering a wide range of hard news stories and features from Palestine. She is also the correspondent for MCD -Radio Montecarlo Addoualiya (France), and the radio representative in Palestine. Fatemah Farag
Fatemah Farag is the founder and CEO of Welad Elbalad Media, a company dedicated to community media development and media excellence in Egypt. She is a World Editors Forum Board Member and has been the MENA Director for WAN-IFRA’s Women in News Program, a WAN-IFRA Executive Committee Board Member and a Neiman Fellow. Prior to Welad, Fatemah was the founding chief editor of the English Edition of Al Masry Al Youm. Before 2009, she divided her professional time between the newsroom and journalism training and media education.
Nadim Nashif
Nadim Nashif is a social entrepreneur and digital rights defender. He is also the founder and General director of 7amleh – The Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media, a Palestinian digital rights organization, Nadim is also a senior policy analyst for Al-Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network. For the past 20 years, he has worked on community development issues.
Muamar Orabi
Muamar Orabi is general director and editor-in-chief of Wattan Media Network, an independent Palestinian media organization based in Ramallah that that includes Wattan Media Network (Wattan TV, Wattan FM, and Wattan News Agency), Wattan Institute for Media Research and Future Studies, Wattan Academy for media training and capacity building and Wattan Fact Checking – Fighting Misinformation and Disinformation; Hate Speech and Rumours; and Promoting Media and Digital Literacy – “Daqeeq”. Since 2000, Orabi has worked toward enhancing the role of independent media through leading Wattan in producing reports and programmes that focus on issues of public concern including sensitive and controversial topics such as public sector corruption, unemployment and highlighting marginalized communities and groups, especially women and youth that are rarely covered by other mainstream Palestinian media outlets.
