La lezione mira a spiegare un fenomeno poco noto al grande pubblico, ma che, secondo molti studi, ha fatto parte della vita culturale dell’Occidente bianco: le esposizioni pubbliche di esseri umani, in particolare le esposizioni etniche viventi del XIX secolo. Queste coinvolgevano gruppi di persone presentate come esemplari di varietà antropologiche ed etniche, soprattutto africane, esibite nelle grandi esposizioni internazionali come simboli della diversità umana. Questo fenomeno, legato al colonialismo e all’imperialismo, ha avuto una grande diffusione in Europa, nelle Americhe e in Italia, fino alla prima metà del XX secolo. La lezione esamina il significato di queste esposizioni, i loro obiettivi, la reazione del pubblico e le popolazioni coinvolte, con particolare attenzione alla storia d’Italia. Guido Abbattista è stato ricercatore di Storia moderna presso la Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa e docente presso le università di Perugia Stranieri e di Trieste. È specialista di storia culturale del colonialismo, dell’imperialismo e della percezione della diversità umana nel XVIII e XIX secolo. Ha pubblicato libri su James Mill, Edmund Burke, Lord Bolingbroke, Anquetil-Duperron, l’abbé Raynal, la visione europea della Cina nell’Illuminismo. Ha compiuto i primi studi sistematici sulle esposizioni umane in Italia tra ‘800 e ‘900, sulle quali ha prodotto numerosi scritti, tra cui il recente volume Ethnic Expositions in Italy, 1880 to 1940. Humans on Exhibition (London-New York: Routledge, 2024). Attualmente i suoi interessi si orientano verso la storia delle navigazioni globali in età moderna (1500-1900), con il progetto di storia digitale “Global Sea Routes”.
