Nel percorso espositivo la storia di Pompei è evocata grazie ad una selezione di affreschi conservati presso il Museo archeologico nazionale di Napoli, provenienti dalla Casa del Poeta Tragico, scoperta nel 1824, fra le più eleganti della città vesuviana. Parallelamente e in strettissima assonanza, una selezione di nove incisioni di Francesco Piranesi, tratte dai disegni del padre Giovanni Battista, conservate all’Istituto centrale per la grafica di Roma, richiamano il mito della riscoperta e al contempo la tragica fine della città.
Pompei, tappa essenziale del Grand Tour degli artisti alla fine del XVIII secolo, è parte integrante della storia mondiale che della meditazione sull’antico ha fatto il baricentro del pensiero moderno, protagonista indiscussa della grande cultura europea, come evoca in mostra il ritratto di Goethe realizzato da Wilhelm Tischbein (Certosa e Museo di San Martino, Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Campania).
Ancora oggi, la città antica offre nuovi spunti, come testimoniano le fotografie realizzate da Luigi Spina, provenienti da Castel Sant’Angelo (Pantheon e Castel Sant’Angelo, Direzione musei nazionali della Città di Roma), che la ritraggono immersa in un’atmosfera di deserta suggestiva durante il periodo pandemico Covid-19.
