Napoli, 1897. Un uomo dai modi pomposi e dal gilet sgargiante nascosto sotto una redingote nera si aggira per le strade della città. Dice di chiamarsi Sebastian Melmoth, ma mente: dietro quel nome si nasconde il celebre scrittore Oscar Wilde. Sfiancato dagli anni di prigione e in fuga da un amore spezzato, è approdato a Napoli in cerca di redenzione. Ma ad attenderlo trova solo il disincanto di una borghesia volgare e le ombre della propria disfatta. Finché un giovane pescatore – l’unico ad avergli mostrato umanità – viene ritrovato morto in circostanze misteriose. Wilde si lancia in un’indagine improvvisata, tra catacombe e teatri dimenticati, modisterie raffinate e cimiteri in rovina. Cosa nascondeva quel ragazzo dall’animo apparentemente candido? E cos’è la misteriosa Tomba della Sirena, al centro di una spirale di segreti e ossessioni?
