Il Cubo di Alia Mamduh, da decenni tra le voci più influenti e sperimentali della letteratura araba, offre al lettore italiano uno sguardo sorprendente sull’Iraq pre-Saddam: una scena artistica vivace e aperta al confronto con l’Europa, fatta di arti visive, architettura, musica e avanguardie culturali. Un patrimonio troppo spesso ignorato, che questo romanzo permette di riscoprire. Attraverso la storia di Afaf, artista irachena migrata a Parigi e al centro di una polifonia di voci che raccontano il suo vuoto, Il Cubo indaga i legami familiari, i traumi politici e le ferite lasciate da occupazioni e conflitti, senza mai cadere nel sensazionalismo. Lo stile di Mamduh –psicanalitico, obliquo, visionario – si confronta con i grandi nodi della storia irachena, dal colonialismo britannico all’invasione del 2003. Ne parliamo con tre ospiti d’eccezione: una ricercatrice specializzata in Iraq, un poeta e traduttore iracheno e il traduttore italiano dell’opera. Insieme, ci accompagneranno in un viaggio letterario e storico che ribalta le narrazioni dominanti e restituisce all’Iraq il volto di un paese ricco di cultura, complessità e memoria.
