In this panel, we discuss how independent outlets with just a few staffers have been on the front lines of the fight against authoritarianism in the U.S., and how their business model - driven by reader support - allows them to take risks that the better-funded legacy media is not willing to take.

Julia Angwin is an award-winning investigative journalist, a bestselling author, a New York Times contributing Opinion writer and a Walter Shorenstein Media and Democracy Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School’s Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy. She is the founder of Proof News, a new nonprofit journalism studio which launched in March 2024.
